Field-erected bolted tanks are relatively new in the country. It began decades ago in the US where tanks were made, utilizing steel panels fabricated in the shop, and then shipped to the field for bolted assembly. Through the years this method transformed to include tanks to store liquid and dry bulk materials. One erection method makes use of scaffolds. Panels are lifted and assembled while workers scale the tank walls during the process. They would be several meters off the ground with safety tie-off lines and harnesses provided. An alternative method is by utilizing a series of synchronized, hydraulic screw jacks at grade level, workers do not leave the ground in erecting the bolted tank. This system has been carefully designed for the application, with the tank diameter, height, dead weights, and wind conditions, all taken into consideration in the process.
